Your questions
What's in the box?
A city map with a letter on the back and six numbered scratch cards – one per monster. Young Romans, Guild of Mind, A Wind in May and Prato Magico also come with stickers.
You only need a phone with internet at the end, to enter the code on wunderkammer.wien. No app, no GPS.
How do you play?
- Read the letter, unfold the mapThe letter on the back of the map tells the story and explains the game. The map itself shows you where to go.
- Head to the starting pointTake the first scratch card there – the cards are numbered. On the back of each card, a zoomed-in map shows the zone in more detail.
- Scratch and solveScratch off the riddle – and only as many clues as you need. Where could the monster be hiding?
- Found the monster?Scratch off the picture and compare. With the secret code on wunderkammer.wien you can read the monster's story and see its exact location – which is also the solution if you couldn't find it.
Are the monsters real?
Yes. Every monster really exists somewhere in Vienna: a fountain figure, a sculpture, a stone face on a building – public art that most people walk past every day.
The legend: the Viennese forgot their monsters. Since then the monsters have been grumpy – and the grumpiness has spread across the whole city. Whoever rediscovers them sets Vienna free.
How hard is it?
Every pack has a level bar from 1 to 6:
For ages 8 and up – 6–7-year-olds can play too. For the higher levels, it's best to puzzle it out together.
When and where do you play?
Whenever you like – outdoors and on foot, in the district your pack is set in. You don't have to find all six monsters in one day: take a break any time and carry on another day.
Only 1918 has restrictions: some of its monsters are inside public buildings with opening hours, so 1918 is best played Monday to Friday.
Does it make a good gift?
A gift you experience together: for families, for friends, for anyone new to Vienna – and for everyone who thinks they already know their city.
